About the author
Charlie's literary career
When Charlie was a kid, the confines of societal etiquette made him awkward and shy, except when adults weren't around and he was with friends.
He enjoyed babysitting the neighborhood kids and was going to be a teacher, like most of his family.
Eventually he self taught himself into a degree in acute sarcasm and a Ph.D. in onomatopoeia, which was a legal loophole for making noises in the oppressive atmosphere of the school library. Shush!
He got demerits for distracting other students in prep school. As a C student, and a level 2 class clown, he immersed himself in his cartoon stories, creating indestructible characters as his imaginary friends, like the space alien Pygmalien, a foreigner and tourist that he felt akin to.
Class clowns used comedy and comics to be accepted by the soul crushing artist-guild society.
Class clowns are organic, and free range comedians. While in first grade, he drew a cartoon parody of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, -using stick figures of course.
Charlie's lit agent said to keep his press release realistic and lean more into a believable adversary such as ADHD, altho that term wasn't coined until 1980, when gen X'ers were in high school.
"Perhaps you should identify as a social misfit! If you can include the hot topics of diversity and inclusion, great!" But Charlie stuck with the truth, which is stranger than fiction, judgey wudgey.
He went from liberal arts schools to technical institutes, and was frustrated by not being able to fit in.
Failing to be a viable member of guilds, clubs, unions and organizations, he did what came naturally by forging his own path.
Making noises in libraries around the world using a microphone and his cartoon doodles. He even recorded a beat box version of Frankie's "My Way" to a mild, yet adequate response, and garnered a self-esteem boost in the value of quality.
He credits coming out of his shell to his 5th grade teacher, Mrs Kramer. She suggested redirecting his background disturbances into 5 minutes of "stage time", to do his noise imitations and tom foolery.
His very first story was Volumes of Cats, about his sleepless home life with felines.
How to become a goodly author
Press releases. An interpretation of the truth.
First of all, your image. Ya gotta come up with a writers pseudonym or even an anarthrous nominal premodifier. (Best - selling, World famous, etc)
Like, me, my real name is Charlie, but that doesn't sell. Your given name needs PR adjustment.
Ya know, like Mo, Dav, something cute that creates a browsing speedbump, at a glance.
So Charlie needs to be Charcool, Chaz, Charleton, or Chuq. Pretentious? Yes, but it happens to work.
Secondly, your origin story. It needs conflict, a struggle, how you overcame the odds and are now a hero. Fer example, how you were born cesarean, and struggled with operating doors and navigating hallways.
Sample hero origin story: Charlie got bad grades in school. He was the definition of a C student. ADHD had just been discovered and thus diagnosed. But Charlie had a variant on the spectrum. BARD. Boring Adult Re-activeness Disorder. Teachers who were burnt out on life, society, etc.. and were bland, uninteresting and phoning it in. Out of the dozens of teachers in his academic career, only 2 or 3 actually knew how to relate and instruct him as a person. They taught him how to exit a building by going out a window, thus giving him closure, and he always drew cartoons and comics for his friends to pass the time when he was in the principals office and bla bla bla, you get the idea. Make up pretentious BS. PBS. Ha ha ha ha I got ya.
Thirdly, educational pulpit. Picture a circus tent revival. You are a preacher/authority and you need to tell/sell your audience/flock on your experience from your fictitious upbringing. ADHD only coined in 1982, has been used by most authors born in the late 60's when it wasn't anything more that 'being hyperactive.'
